Feeling A Little 2D?

Uncategorized Nov 23, 2020

If you look closely that picture is two of me in one photograph!

Why is this relevant to feeling a little, well, flat right now? Read on to find out!

Living so much of our lives on screens can leave us feeling a bit flat and 2D! So my daughter Leila and I took a much-needed trip to rest & rejuvenate in nature this past weekend.

We spent time hiking, slowing down, journaling, relaxing, & being off of tech (or at least greatly reduced!).

AND HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED!

This is one of those duh-aha moments you may hear me reference. This is when something happens that seems obvious or simple and it is highly impactful.

OF COURSE I know that unscheduled time is essential to the creative brain (this is why we often get incredible ideas in the shower or meditating). And yet like most humans, I need constant reminders in life of the things I already know!

I noticed some cool spaces within me opening up when every moment wasn't filled with a to-do list.

It Only Took Me 44 Years...

(Snapshot of Maui, our recent addition to the family)

What if you knew from the time you were born that you were sacred, worthy, and a powerful creator?

You are.

That the power of your thoughts impacts everything (for better or worse) in your life.

They do.

I get it - you may not believe all of this. Or put value on it. Years ago I had no idea...
Or you may have done some work in your life by now and get it on an intellectual level but have yet to reach that experiential level of believing in your own worth & capacity.

Why would you?

Most of us do not get the message of being powerful & valuable creators of our lives when we are growing up.

Instead our parents pass down to us the conditioning that their parents had passed down to them.

I am sure you got your own unique messages from your upbringing. Perhaps some version of being conditioned to work hard, seek approval, reach the external 'success' markers, be a 'good'...

Transformation... In Process

What if 2020 were not the worst year ever, but the most incredible, powerful, and transformational we have known?

What if it were happening FOR us rather than TO us?

What if it provided the perfect recipe to create sustainable shifts that uplifted and empowered our environment and our people? What if it created the perfect conditions to dismantle systems that disempower and disconnect us from our inter-connection and our shared humanity?

What if we started by dismantling our own internal systems that disconnect us from our deeper wisdom?

Of course the unknown is often quite scary.
We can get immobilized, overwhelmed, and fearful. We may want to curl up and hibernate (I had some of those feelings this morning).

Here is the thing I am learning though - we can hold all of that AND simultaneously allow ourselves to be called forward, to declare powerfully what we are aligned with and create without knowing all of the steps. We can be in the goo - unfamiliar and confusing. We run a...

How Do We Stand For A Just World?

fear justice peace racism Jun 04, 2020

"In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist." - Angela Davis

Helicopters outside of Washington D.C. circle overhead on stand-by for the protests as I write this. They have become the background soundtrack this week.
I have taken my daughter to different regions to speak out and protest the last few days. We have both been called to be with people, to listen, to show our solidarity, and to rise up out of our own inertia. The above photo was taken at a Baltimore protest when police officers took a knee in honor of justice and the lives lost.

To me, the quote above highlights the fact that we can’t consider ourselves part of the solution if we are staying silent about racism -- we have to be actively and vocally against racism in every arena.

For too long I have gotten to stay on the periphery of the injustices and atrocities going on in our country. I have watched the news, cried out against the horrific events of...

The Adventurer's Spirit as an Ally

adventure explorer mindset May 20, 2020

An adventurer’s spirit as a great ally…

The visual of lacing up some hiking shoes, grabbing a backpack, and heading out into the world of life for an adventure is one that has felt like an ally for me as I have navigated the days since…

Last week our topic for Fireside Chat (see below for what this is) was Exploration - this has to be one of my favorites! This conversation inspired so much within me that I wanted to share it here with our larger community.

Why has this been so powerful?

When we choose the adventurer’s spirit as a way of relating in the world, it allows us to step out of a limited mindset that is hindered by our past patterns and experiences. It allows us to move beyond obstacles and fears to embrace the path before us with a zeal and curiosity. An excitement for what could be just around the corner!?

"What’s that? A boulder in my path?" In the adventurer’s mindset I can get curious and figure out how to move around it, over...

The Powerful Impact of Your Morning Routine...

Hey there,
Chai Matcha Tea anyone? What is that you say?
It is a concoction that I have slowly perfected over time. I love the rich creamy taste of the coconut manna & creamer, the deep chai spice, and the straight-up morning smack of the matcha. I also love the act of making this drink - it is a tad of a process as you will see if you watch the 40 second video. But it is sooo worth it as it actually delivers much more than delicious nutrition. The mindful preparation of the tea is part of a series of morning routines that I implement to set an intentional tone to my day.

The Impact of Morning Routines

Our morning routines are one of the most powerful ways to frame our entire day! When we look at the morning routines of successful people, well, we can see there is nothing accidental or reactive about the set-up of their day. They generally include some variation of meditation, exercise, and intention-setting.

Years ago Tony Robbins introduced the concept of...

How to Make a Beautiful Mind

“I really want a partner that makes me feel gaga!” my friend John said to me the other day as we were taking a blustery walk along the trail near my house. After some clarification on what ‘gaga’ meant to him (head-over-heals, in love, joyous) our conversation got really interesting. What we noted together was that John was interested in this ideal partner (an external resource) who would make him feel a certain way inside (internal state). I asked John if it would be possible to come from a more expansive view around this gaga feeling. I mean why limit ourselves to such a restrictive experience (John had been dating but wasn’t getting the gaga feeling). I decided to propose a wild idea - “John, what if we could feel gaga regardless of the external things/people in our lives? What if that feeling were available to us anytime? What if we don’t have to rely on getting something external to ourselves to create a state of being that we...

Fostering Manny: From Fear to Love

It’s 1pm and I am driving down the road 3 days before Christmas questioning my own sanity. In the backseat are my teenage daughter, her best friend, and a very exuberant 50 pound dog whom we have known for about 10 minutes. He seems friendly yet slightly crazed, pacing back and forth between the two girls, stepping on them and then circling back to poke his head up between the front seats. Round and round he goes.  I have been warned by the dog rescue agency through whom we are fostering that this dog, Manny, will be VERY stressed and unable to learn or process anything for about 3-4 days! Buckle your seatbelts!

We have not had a dog in a long time and fostering through this rescue seemed like a good way to reacquaint ourselves with the responsibilities, challenges, and joys of having a dog. We were not disappointed! We got to experience wild jumping, snuggles, leash pulling, squirrel-chasing, throw-up, plenty of poop pick-up, and lots and lots of walks and runs....

How This Mug Keeps Me Connected to My Intentions

Making this mug was the first thing I successfully did after falling onto a concrete sub-floor and sustaining multiple impacts, including a closed-head injury. After being out of commission for 2-3 weeks, my artist friend, Bonny Lundy, scooped me up and took me to an open ceramics studio. There was a wisdom in her actions, helping me rewire my brain through doing - in this case the use of my hands (this is the whole beautiful premise of occupational therapy). I was delighted to be playing in the clay, my senses coming back alive through engagement. And I thought my mug was AMAZING. Not just in a quirky hand-made cool kind of way - it is that. But in a ‘THIS IS PHENOMENAL’ kind of way (there really were some cognitive misfirings going on). I laugh as I hold it in my hands now and see it more clearly - imperfections, uneven walls, cracks at the seams. And yet it is still so efficient, holding my tea daily for nearly 10 years and counting.

I could have easily died or been...
