How to Make a Beautiful Mind

“I really want a partner that makes me feel gaga!” my friend John said to me the other day as we were taking a blustery walk along the trail near my house. After some clarification on what ‘gaga’ meant to him (head-over-heals, in love, joyous) our conversation got really interesting. What we noted together was that John was interested in this ideal partner (an external resource) who would make him feel a certain way inside (internal state). I asked John if it would be possible to come from a more expansive view around this gaga feeling. Fostering Manny: From Fear to Love

It’s 1pm and I am driving down the road 3 days before Christmas questioning my own sanity. In the backseat are my teenage daughter, her best friend, and a very exuberant 50 pound dog whom we have known for about 10 minutes. We were not disappointed! We got to experience wild jumping, snuggles, leash pulling, squirrel-chasing, throw-up, plenty of poop pick-up, and lots and lots of walks and runs....

After being out of commission for 2-3 weeks, my artist friend, Bonny Lundy, scooped me up and took me to an open ceramics studio. There was a wisdom in her actions, helping me rewire my brain through doing - in this case the use of my hands (this is the whole beautiful premise of occupational therapy). I was delighted to be playing in the clay, my senses coming back alive through engagement. And I thought my mug was AMAZING. Not just in a quirky hand-made cool kind of way - it is that. But in a ‘THIS IS PHENOMENAL’ kind of way (there really were some cognitive misfirings going on). I laugh as I hold it in my hands now and see it more clearly - imperfections, uneven walls, cracks at the seams. And yet it is still so efficient, holding my tea daily for nearly 10 years and counting.

I could have easily died or been...
